Chickens, Ducks, and Turkeys

Picture
Lockehaven Farm is home to several varieties of heritage breed chickens complimented by two ducks. Breeds include Buff Orpingtons, Plymouth Rocks, Partridge Rocks, and Sussex. We keep mainly layers, though we have raised meat birds as well. Chickens are great for keeping areas weed free, eating ticks, and fertilizing whatever area they use as a run.

If you are local, you can request farm fresh eggs. Supplies are limited.

The ducks have managed to integrate themselves into the chicken flock. The two groups of birds get along swimmingly and don't seem to mind each others company.  Duck eggs have a few uses. They seem to be popular in certain Chinese cuisine and their eggs are reputed to be excellent for baking purposes.

The Lockehaven Farm is also home to a not so wild flock of wild turkeys *see slide show below). We keep them well fed, make them welcome in our pastures and forests, and ask only that they contribute one or two birds to our Thanksgiving menu. It is an excellent relationship thus far.
